Body Form - A Style of Play used as an alternative to the stack. Named thus due to the presence of wings! Clear - The action an offensive player makes when leaving space for other players to cut into. Usually heard as a shout CLEAR CLEAR!" Clog - Remaining in a space on the field that should be empty for someone else to cut into. Usually takes place just before someone shouts "CLEAR CLEAR!". Cup - The three defensive players that surround the player with the disc during a zone defence. One player marking the disc and the two others 3 metres away. Cut - An offensive movement to confuse and try to get away from you're marker in order to receive the disc. Disc Width - What people tend to say if you're marking the player with the disc too close. You have to be a disc width away. Double Team - A Situation that occurs if either: A member of the defensive team other than your marker is attempting to block your throw and is within 3 metres of you, or the offensive player needs to buy some time against a zone defence! Dump Pass - A short pass behind to another offensive player for no gain of ground. The Throw made after cut, clear and clog have happened and you're marker says 9! Floater - A high pass usually associated with indoors that has little use other than hang in the air a long time and confuse everyone on the field - usually ending in a pile up of players. Also know as Hospital Pass or Toss Pass. Flow - An offensive style of play where the team time's its cuts from the stack perfectly to end in a score down field. This is a rare breed so keep your eyes peeled! Force - This is the direction the defense is trying to force the offensive team to throw the disc. This can be either to force the disc out to the sidelines or into the middle of the field. Fronting - A defensive tactic where the player stands between the thrower and receiver, facing the receiver Can be broken by the German. Garbage - A bad throw. You may hear someone say "good Garbage" when someone, despite the bad throw, makes a great catch. German - A offensive tactic to throw the disc when the defender isn't looking and stops defenders fronting. The throw tends to go over the shoulder and ends in humiliation. (Named after the German team who did this). Hammer - An over head pass usually accompanying panic and a stall count of 9. Handler - The name given to the offensive team members that usually make most of the throws and play further back. An either coveted or strictly avoided position. Huck - A very long down field pass. See Hammer for further information. Hospital Pass - See Floater Isolation - A type of offence where one player is isolated and cuts till they get the disc. Layout - A diving catch resulting in grazed knees and elbows. Marker - The defensive player who is defending the thrower trying to force them to throw in a particular direction (see force). Avoid at all costs if playing Junk defence. Junk - A type of defense where the lazy/ old players stand around in space and the young stupid player runs around after the disc. See Marker. Middle - An offensive position that plays between handlers and deeps. Occasionally make second cuts and endzone passes, most often ignored! Pick - A violation that occurs when a defensive player can't keep with there opponent because another player blocks their path. Or the defender is too old and fat to keep up with you! Pivot - Often chanted from the sidelines to try and make a player move their feet while on disc so it's easier to make a different pass. You only need keep one foot on the ground, the pivot foot, and move the other to change body position. Pull - Heard on the field as much as at the socials. The long downfield throw that starts each point. Usually discussed thus: "I'll pull", "no, I want to pull", "but I haven't pulled yet" Reading - The ability to predict the path of the disc and position yourself to catch it. Normally brought up by the thrower, "READ THE DISC" Spirit - The most important aspect of the Ultimate game to insure fair play on the field and lots of fun off it. Show - The act of showing the disc to the defending player once you have out skied them. WARNING - to players you don't know this can be very offensive and extremely against the spirit. In a tight game against US team, DON'T show someone the disc. In a friendly game against a very good friend show it as much as you like! Sky - Generally happens after successful reading of the disc. You make a huge jump to catch the disc. Stall - An offensive player has ten seconds (eight indoors) to throw the disc. This is called the stall. Stall Count - The amount of time the thrower has to make the pass. This must begin with "stalling, one, two..." with one second intervals. Stall Out - Usually shouted just after the marker says ten in the stall count. A successful call results in a turnover. Strip - When the disc is forcefully knocked out of an offensive players hand. The disc then returns to the thrower. Time Out - A period of time during a game where players can talk about plays and organise the team. Also used to get breath back or try and work out how to get out of the mess you are in. Toss Pass - See Floater Travel - An offensive violation where the thrower steps, picks up or drags the pivot foot. Use wisely within the spirit of the game. Turnover - Where the disc has been lost by the offensive team by either a drop, inaccurate throw or defensive block. The defensive team switches to offense and immediately forgets what to do resulting in further turnovers. |
